Description

During the first two years of the War, the many State Governments strained to ensure their troops were equipped when entering service. Several adopted the shell jacket in varying forms. New York, Illinois, Ohio are most notable on the list. Due to the rush to fill those orders, contractors in some cases were authorized to substitute jean cloth in place of wool. Examples of those jackets, caps and even overcoats made from indigo dyed jean survive today. One of my favorites is this 9 Button State Jacket. There are three extant originals of this type that we know of with each having some slight variations. The one we copied was recently sold at auction in 2015.

Our coat is made from REAL indigo dyed jean cloth. It has a nine button front, six-piece body. It is lined with linen and features a burlap interlining. The cuffs are faced and have two buttons each.
